CVSR 110. Introduction to Community Organizing. 0.5 Units.
This course introduces students to the theory and core practices of community organizing, through which local communities build power for collective action to democratically transform the social conditions in which they live. The course will focus on socially disadvantaged communities pursuing equitable participation in society and will examine major traditions of community organizing.
CVSR 397. Community-Based Internship. 0.5 Units.
An internship with an organization or agency that seeks to enhance well-being and equity in the community at any scale, from local to global. May be registered for 0.5 unit (70 hours for the semester) or 1 unit (140 hours for the semester). Basic requirements will include periodic reflections during the internship and a final evaluation from the supervisor in the organization/agency; additional requirements will be negotiated by the student, instructor, and supervisor, in consultation with the program director and Center for Community Engagement. Pre-requisites: permission of program director and completion of one course listed for the Minor in Civic and Social Responsibility (or approved substitute). May be repeated for credit up to 2 units, with the same or a different organization/agency; up to 2 units may be counted towards the Minor in Civic and Social Responsibility. Prior to beginning work with the organization/agency, students must complete an orientation offered by the Center for Community Engagement (contact cce@stetson.edu) and an orientation offered by Career Success (contact career@stetson.edu or call 386-822-7315).
